What Is Macular Degeneration?

Many of our clients have heard of this eye condition, but are unsure what exactly it is. It is a condition that mainly occurs as you age (60 and older). The central portion of the eye, the macula, begins to deteriorate causing loss of central vision. There isn't a known cause or cure for macular degeneration, but it is linked to hereditary factors and individuals who smoke.

What Are Wet and Dry Macular Degeneration?

You can think of dry macular degeneration as the type that takes years to progress. In the initial stages, you may barely noticeable symptoms. It won't cause total blindness, and it can affect one eye or both. The dry form of AMD can develop into wet macular degeneration, which causes the growth of accessory blood vessels that leak under the retina. This situation is less common than dry macular degeneration, but it affects vision more severely.
