Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve and one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. The optic nerve becomes damaged and is often due to a buildup of pressure in the eye.
It's not certain what causes glaucoma. There seems to be a problem with drainage of fluid in the eye, causing a buildup of pressure that causes damage to the optic nerve and eventual blindness. Glaucoma tends to run in families and is most often diagnosed after the age of 40.
Open-angle glaucoma may have no symptoms at all, which is why it is so important to have your eyes checked frequently, even if you aren't experiencing any vision problems. Regular eye exams can mean early diagnosis and glaucoma treatment. In the case of acute-angle glaucoma, symptoms may include severe eye pain, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Other symptoms may include hazy vision and blurred vision, or sudden vision loss.
Glaucoma treatment is most effective when the disease is caught in its early stages. Eye drops and other medications are used to control symptoms and prevent further damage, and in some cases, laser surgery is used to help alleviate pressure.
There is no known way to prevent glaucoma from occurring. The best course of action is early detection and diagnosis by visiting your eye doctors on a regular basis.
